India and Tamil
Tamil is one of the 22
Indian languages listed in Schedule 8 of the Constitution of India.
It is noteworthy that
Tamil was the first language to be declared a classical language in India.
On 12.10.2004 Government
of India announced Tamil as a Classical language. Government Order No: No. IV -
14014/2004 - NI - II
It is noteworthy that
Sanskrit was declared a classical language in 2005 after Tamil was declared a
classical language.
Tamil scholars will
primarily consider the steps taken by Parithimar Kalaignar to declare Tamil as
a classical language and the document ‘Statement of the status of Tamil as a
classical language’ by George L. Hart.
