Tamil is one of the 22 Indian languages ​​listed in Schedule 8 of the Constitution of India.

It is noteworthy that Tamil was the first language to be declared a classical language in India.

On 12.10.2004 Government of India announced Tamil as a Classical language. Government Order No: No. IV - 14014/2004 - NI - II

It is noteworthy that Sanskrit was declared a classical language in 2005 after Tamil was declared a classical language.

Tamil scholars will primarily consider the steps taken by Parithimar Kalaignar to declare Tamil as a classical language and the document ‘Statement of the status of Tamil as a classical language’ by George L. Hart.

            இந்திய அரசியலமைப்பின் 8வது அட்டவணையில் இடம்பெற்றுள்ள 22 இந்திய மொழிகளில் தமிழும் ஒன்றாகும்.

            இந்தியாவில் செம்மொழியாக அறிவிக்கப்பட்ட முதல் மொழி தமிழ் என்பது கவனத்தில் கொள்ளத்தக்கது.

தமிழ் செம்மொழியாக இந்திய அரசால் அறிவிக்கப்பட்ட நாள் 12.10. 2004. அதற்கான அரசாணை எண் : No. IV – 14014 / 2004 – NI – II

தமிழ் செம்மொழியாக அறிவிக்கப்பட்ட பின்பே 2005 ஆம் ஆண்டில் சமஸ்கிருதம் செம்மொழியாக அறிவிக்கப்பட்டது என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

தமிழ் செம்மொழியாக அறிவிக்கப்படுவதற்கு பரிதிமாற்கலைஞர் அவர்கள் மேற்கொண்ட முன்னெடுப்புகளையும் ஜார்ஜ் எல் ஹார்ட் அவர்கள் எழுதிய ‘Statement of the status of Tamil as classical language’ என்ற ஆவணத்தையும் தமிழறிஞர்கள் முதன்மையாகக் கருதுவர்.
