Fundamentals for Mathematics Students

Fundamentals for Mathematics Students

A mathematics teacher must ensure that his students know the basics of mathematics before starting his class.

For example, a teacher teaching mathematics at upper primary level may find it useful to start his class after checking that his students have a good understanding of the following fundamentals.

Math basics to know

1) Be able to read and write numbers up to thousand fluently. (Should be able to read and write both mother tongue and English.)

2) Especially when asked to write from 1 to 20 there should be no chance for small errors in number names in numerals and words. You can conduct this as a basic aptitude test. Make sure that all the students in the class get twenty out of twenty marks in this exam. You should also make sure that you can write numbers from 1 to 20 in English as well as in mother tongue. After that you have to make sure that you can write the number names in numerals and words of numbers 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 1000, 100000, 10000000 correctly in mother tongue and English.

3) After knowing that students know how to read and write three digit numbers fluently, then they should be tested whether they know how to read and write four digit, five digit, six digit and seven digit numbers.

4) Must be able to read and write numbers in Indian and International system divided by commas according to place value.

5) The knowledge odd numbers and even numbers should be checked. (This blog has a simple method activity to know and understand odd and even numbers easier.)

6) Check whether prime numbers are memorized in numbers up to 100. Otherwise, they should be given a list of prime numbers and should be made to do the necessary exercises so that they can get it in their minds.

7) Also check for proper understanding of predecessor, successor and place value of numbers.

If a math teacher checks and confirms these seven basics with his students and then starts the classroom lessons, there will be no difficulty in making the students understand the math lesson.
