Direct proportion applicable to discount

Direct proportion applicable to discount

If the ‘Aadi’ month (4th Tamil month) starts, it means that the discount season has started. This is why they call the discount as 'Aadi discount'.

Shoppers tell us how much discount they give in percentage. Even those who have never heard of the word percentage will be heard this ‘Aadi’ month.

The reason I say this is to show how important percentage is and that there are discount percentage calculations.

Since we can do percentage calculations easily using direct proportion, we can also do discount calculations involving percentage easily using direct proportion.

Let's see how. Before that, let's know a few things.

If a product is offered at a discount, it is sold at a discount from that price.

They would have even marked that price on the label with a ‘×’ mark, right? That price is the marked price. Below that is a discounted price, which is the sale price.

If we relate marked price to a percentage, it is 100 percent. From this they will discount 10 percent, 15 percent, 50 percent.

For example 10 percent discount means if 10 percent is subtracted from 100 percent then that is percentage related to the selling price!

So to relate the selling price to the percentage, we need to subtract the discount percentage from 100!

That's all we need to know.

Now let's look at a calculation related to discounts.

A saree is sold at Rs. 940 at 6% discount. What is the selling price of that saree?

How to find answer for this calculation? Don’t afraid as we to have direct proportion.

Whether you are calculating directly, or tabulating. I leave it up your choice.

Shall we first tabulate it for everyone's understanding?

Price

x

940

Percentage

100

94

Since we don't know the marked price in this table, we keep it as x. Yes, that's what we need to find out in this calculation. As the percentage of marked price is 100 we have marked 100 below it.

Selling Price Rs. 940 has been given for so we have noted it as such. Shouldn't you want a rate percentage for that! It is 100 – 6 = 94 as the discount percentage is subtracted from 100 as a percentage of the marked price.

You mean we know all this? However, it is better to give an explanation!

Now all that is required is to equate the ratios and cross multiply to find the answer i.e. the value of x.

x / 100 = 940 / 94

94x = 940 × 100

94x = 94000

x = 94000 / 100

x = 1000

So the marked price is Rs. 1000.

Find out what is the selling price if the marked price of the saree is Rs. 1000 at 6% discount.

Also, assuming that the selling price is not known, If the marked price of saree is Rs.1000 and is sold at a discount of 6%, find out the selling price and check whether the selling price is correct.

Don't be angry that you have started giving us calculations as homework these days. Mathematics is practice. Only by practicing a lot of calculations will you become a good Mathematical student. That's what it's for.

What do we see next?

How to do tax related calculations using direct proportion.

Be prepared to learn it next.
